MENTAL HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE

With special guest speaker  Starr Dobson, President & CEO, Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia
Also featuring  Sue Mercer, Program Consultant, Mental Health Commission of Canada

In any given year, 1 in 5 people in Canada will personally experience a mental health problem or illness.  Our October luncheon is a special extended session on mental health in the workplace, that will offer a broad discussion on identifying, managing and supporting employees and co-workers experiencing mental health problems. Please note, this is a special feature luncheon and will run to 2:30 pm.

Starr Dobson is the current CEO and President of the Nova Scotia Mental Health Foundation and Co-Chair of the Minister’s Panel on Innovation in Mental Health & Addictions.  A former journalist, Starr has won several awards for her advocacy work in Nova Scotia. Starr will present “He is me, she is me”, a look at the personal faces of mental health and addiction crises.

Sue Mercer of the Mental Health Commission will discuss the program their organization developed to reduce stigma in the workplace. It is well documented that part of creating a healthy workplace is to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. Sue will outline the research that went into the MHCC program (which included companies in Nova Scotia). She will also provide key messages on components of the program and give advice on how to support staff when issues arise, and on what resources are available to employers.
