January Webinar
Nova Scotia Property Tax Policy and Appeal Overview

January 27th
12:00 to 1:00PM (AST)
Virtual Session

On January 10th, commercial property tax owners will receive their annual assessment notices. Conseqently, we are seeing a lot of discussion in the media regarding property taxes and new policies by the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM).

BOMA Nova Scotia is looking for increased fairness in distributing the taxation burden in Nova Scotia and convened a Commercial Tax Task Force in 2021. We have been hard at work reviewing taxation policies, culminating in the creation of a White Paper for presentation to the applicable Departments. In this month's webinar, we are pleased to welcome Mathieu Maillet of Altus Group, who will provide an overview of this White Paper and address several other pertinant property tax topics:

1   Brief overview of the Nova Scotia Assessment Cycle:
    - 2022 is the first year taxpayers will be able to argue the negative impacts of COVID-19 into their assessed values
2  Assessed Value trends by assest type (office, industrial, retail, hospitality etc.)
3  Overview of the BOMA NS White Paper on provincial taxation and new taxation policies proposed by the HRM:
    - New proposed taxation zones and assessment averaging scheme discussion and recommendations
    - The need to abolish the residential tax capping program
    - The need for a stronger equity and uniformity consideration in the Assessment Act
 4  Q&A period

We are pleased to offer this webinar at no cost, however, advance registration is required. A link will be emailed to all registered participants 24 hrs prior to the session.
